Before I go further, I must declare that this isn’t a satire piece. This is not a joke. Protecting the earth from aliens is a serious business. NASA is willing to pay up to $187,000 a year to hire someone for the post of a Planetary Protection Officer.
The job will revolve around ensuring that alien scum doesn’t reach the earth. Or in simpler terms, alien micro organisms that might pose a significant risk to humans and our planet do not get into the wrong hands.
According to the job description posted by NASA, the candidate will work at the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance for Planetary Protection. The goal is to help avoid organic and biological contamination to humans during space exploration and experimentation.
NASA claims that almost all of its space explorations involve a lot of experiments which constitute taking earth based materials to space. The same may also involve bringing back organic or inorganic materials from other objects in space back to earth. This may constitute a high-risk to human population on earth. Aliens themselves currently seem to have no plans on coming down to earth though.
The job will pay $124,406 to $187,000 per year and is currently open to US nationals only. The job of Planetary Protection Offer is a full-time job at NASA. Currently, there’s just one vacancy for the role.
The requirements for the job include:
1. Advanced knowledge of planetary protection
2. Demonstrated experience in planning, executing and overseeing elements of space programs of national importance
3. Skills in diplomacy
Unfortunately watching a lot of science fiction movies or reading comics isn’t an automatic qualification. You get a really cool designation to boast about on your social media profiles though. No points for guessing it’ll make you an instant star on Tinder.
The whole idea of protecting our planet from aliens seems quite interesting given how we’re totally destroying it with global warming on one hand. Our planet might not need aliens to destroy us since we’re ourselves excelling at the job of destroying our own home. The only home we’ve got.
