Apple’s annual September launch event is so exciting, thousands of Apple fans watch the live event from across the globe. This, apart from hundreds of members of the press who are invited to the launch event. This year Apple had very little to reveal apart from confirming the leaks we’ve been seeing in the last few weeks.
Apple launched the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X smartphones at the event today. This is the first time Apple launched two new iPhones, bringing the iPhone X super cycle. Apple claims that it has been working on the iPhone X for quite some time now and it’s a special device for the company. The iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus are regular new iPhones we usually see every year with incremental updates.
The new iPhones are also coming a bit quicker to India this year, as the case has been for Apple’s continued interest in India. We’ll discuss Indian prices, launch dates, and availability later in the story. Let’s first take a look at the devices Apple announced today.
Apple iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus feature a new glass and aluminum design which ships in three new colors. Apple claims that the new design features a highly durable glass, something no other competing device currently offers. The iPhone 8 features Retina HD display and is powered by Apple’s A11 Bionic chip.
Apple has also improved the cameras on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The new iPhones come with a new Portrait Lightning mode which is currently shipping in beta. Apple has designed a glass back on the new iPhones which have made wireless charging possible on the new smartphones.
The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus will ship in three new colors: space gray, silver, and gold. Although the color names are the usual ones, Apple promises a whole new finish on each of them. The display itself now comes with True Tone that helps adjust the display according to the environment of the user.
The biggest overhaul in the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is the processor that powers it. Since Apple is betting big on upcoming AR (augmented reality) applications, the new A11 Bionic chip is powerful enough to take them all. The six-core CPU design includes two performance cores and four efficiency cores. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will run iOS 11 out of the box.

The iPhone X features a 5.8-inch Super Retina display and is powered by the A11 Bionic chip. The iPhone X offers customers a whole new way to unlock their smartphone: use facial recognition system. Apple calls it Face ID. The new feature is powered by a bunch of sensors and a new TrueDepth front-facing camera.
Apple’s new premium iPhone features an all-screen display with a slightly weird notch at the top that includes all the sensors needed for enabling Face ID. The front and back all-glass design includes the same highly durable glass which is being used on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
iPhone X is Apple’s first smartphone to ship with an OLED display. Apple feels OLED displays are now good enough to be used on iPhones. The 5.8-inch OLED display on the iPhone X is being called the Super Retina display.
Coming to Face ID, Apple feels it will revolutionize authentication on the iPhone X. The TrueDepth camera system consists of a dot projector, an infrared camera, and a flood illuminator all of which work together to create Face ID. Face ID can be used to unlock the phone, make payments with Apple Pay or App Store, and authenticate on apps that integrate it, just like Touch ID.
